The Faribault SWCD/P&Z actively uses a Geographic Information System (GIS) to support our natural resource management efforts.
What is GIS?
GIS is a powerful computer based mapping program that allows for the creation, manipulation, and analysis of a wide variety of information.  With GIS you can overlay aerial photography, soils, wetlands, topography and other information to identify and prioritize natural resources protection and management.  GIS allows staff to conduct preliminary assessments of sites throughout the county before conducting a field review.  It also allows staff to easily create and update maps to communicate this information to the public.
